When We Were Kings

Documentary and Nonfiction Film

When We Were Kings is a 1996 documentary directed by Leon Gast, built from archival footage and later interviews recounting the Rumble in the Jungle, the October 30, 1974 heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman held in Kinshasa, Zaire. Alongside the fight itself, the film covers the accompanying Zaire 74 music festival and the contrasting personalities and public images of the two boxers. Gast spent twenty two years completing the film before its release, and it won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

FAQs

Why did the Zaire 74 music festival take place a month before the Rumble in the Jungle?

Foreman was injured in training and the fight was postponed.

The festival was meant to accompany the fight, but it ended up coming a month earlier. George Foreman was injured in training, and the fight was delayed while the music festival went ahead as scheduled. The film still presents the concerts and the fight as one story, drawing on footage of performers such as James Brown, B.B. King and The Spinners.
