Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives is a 2010 Thai film written and directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, following Boonmee, a dying man who retreats to his farm in rural northeastern Thailand, where he is visited by the ghost of his long-dead wife and by his long-lost son, who returns transformed into a red-eyed monkey ghost, prompting Boonmee to reflect on his own past lives. Drawing on Weerasethakul's interest in Thai folk beliefs, Buddhist ideas of reincarnation and his own family's history in the region, the film moves fluidly between naturalistic rural life and unexplained supernatural encounters. It won the Palme d'Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, the first Thai film to do so.
