This American Life

Radio Drama and Broadcast Landmarks

This American Life is an American public radio program hosted by Ira Glass, first broadcast in 1995 from Chicago public radio station WBEZ, presenting each week a set of documentary-style journalism and personal-narrative segments loosely organized around a single theme. The program departed from conventional radio news formats by favoring long-form storytelling with a strong authorial voice, a style that proved highly influential on the narrative-journalism podcasts that followed it decades later. This American Life is widely regarded as instrumental in establishing the modern narrative-audio format now common across public radio and podcasting.
