Tintin in the Land of the Soviets is a comic strip created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé, serialized weekly in the children's supplement Le Petit Vingtieme from January 1929 to May 1930 before being collected as a book, marking the first appearance of the reporter character Tintin and his dog Snowy. The strip was commissioned by the conservative Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle as anti-communist satire aimed at young readers, sending Tintin to the Soviet Union to expose what the strip portrayed as the failures and deceptions of the Soviet system. As the inaugural volume of what became The Adventures of Tintin, a series that continued for decades and became a defining work of the Franco-Belgian comics tradition, it established Tintin as one of the most widely recognized characters in the history of European comics.
