A Separation is a 2011 Iranian drama film written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, following an upper-middle-class Tehran couple whose divorce proceedings, and the daughter caught between them, become entangled with a legal and moral crisis after the husband hires a caregiver from a poorer background to look after his father, who has Alzheimer's disease. Made independently of state support on a budget of about 800,000 dollars, it grossed more than 24 million dollars worldwide and won near-universal critical acclaim. At the 2012 Academy Awards it became the first Iranian film to win Best Foreign Language Film, its screenplay was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, the first non-English-language screenplay nominated in that category in five years, and at the Berlin International Film Festival it won the Golden Bear for Best Film, the first Iranian film to receive that award.

Did the Iranian authorities try to stop A Separation from being made?
A ministry ban in September 2010 was lifted in early October after Farhadi apologized for his remarks.
Briefly, yes. In September 2010 the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance banned Asghar Farhadi from making the film, because of an acceptance speech at an award ceremony in which he expressed support for several Iranian film personalities, among them the exiled filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf and the imprisoned political filmmaker Jafar Panahi. The ban was lifted at the beginning of October after Farhadi claimed to have been misperceived and apologized for his remarks. Like his previous three films, A Separation was made without any government support.
