Daughters of the Dust is a 1991 independent drama written and directed by Julie Dash, the first feature film directed by an African American woman to receive a general theatrical release in the United States. Set in 1902, it follows three generations of Gullah women of the Peazant family on Saint Helena Island, South Carolina, as they prepare to migrate to the American North, and was praised for its lush visuals, its use of Gullah language, and its non-linear narrative structure; cinematographer Arthur Jafa won an award for his work at the Sundance Film Festival. Funded through the American Playhouse public television series and distributed by Kino International, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2004.
