On the Waterfront is a 1954 American film directed by Elia Kazan, starring Marlon Brando as a former boxer working as a longshoreman who informs against a corrupt union boss controlling violence and extortion on the docks. The film was made shortly after Kazan himself testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee and named other members of the Communist Party, and its sympathetic treatment of a man who informs on his own community has often been read by critics and historians as Kazan's own justification for that testimony. On the Waterfront won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Brando, and is widely regarded as one of the defining American films of the 1950s.

Was On the Waterfront based on real events?
It drew on a Pulitzer Prize-winning 1948 newspaper series about union corruption on the docks.
Yes. Budd Schulberg based the story and screenplay on a Pulitzer Prize-winning series of articles titled Crime on the Waterfront, written by Malcolm Johnson and published in the New York Sun in 1948. The articles reported on corruption in the longshoremen's union, which is the setting the film dramatizes through its former boxer turned dockworker.
