Gunsmoke is an American radio Western drama that premiered on CBS in 1952, starring William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon, a lawman in the fictional frontier town of Dodge City, Kansas. The series was deliberately written and performed with a grittier, more morally ambiguous and adult tone than earlier radio Westerns aimed largely at children, presenting violence and its consequences with unusual realism for the genre. Gunsmoke's radio success led to a television adaptation in 1955 that ran for twenty seasons, becoming one of the longest-running primetime dramas in American television history, while the original radio series is remembered as a defining example of radio drama's late, more mature Western form.

Who played Dillon in the Gunsmoke audition recordings before William Conrad starred in the series?
Rye Billsbury and then Howard Culver voiced Dillon in 1949 audition recordings.
Two audition recordings of the same script were made in 1949. A Radio Classics history of the series says the first was recorded on June 11, 1949, with Rye Billsbury voicing the hero in Mark Dillon Goes to Gouge Eye, and that another audition using the same script took place on July 15 with Howard Culver in the Dillon role. Culver appeared to have the inside track, but he was already the voice of Straight Arrow on the Mutual network and contractually was not allowed to do a competing Western series.
