The Maltese Falcon is a 1941 American film, the directorial debut of John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart as private detective Sam Spade and adapted from Dashiell Hammett's novel of the same name, in which Spade becomes entangled with a group of criminals pursuing a valuable jeweled statuette. The film's shadowy visual style, morally ambiguous characters and hardboiled dialogue helped establish the visual and narrative conventions that would come to define American film noir. The Maltese Falcon is widely regarded as one of the first true examples of film noir and one of the most influential American crime films ever made.
