Deliverance (1972 film)

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

Deliverance is a 1972 American thriller film directed and produced by John Boorman from a screenplay by James Dickey, adapted from his 1970 novel of the same name. It follows four businessmen from Atlanta who travel into the remote wilderness of northern Georgia to canoe a river before it is dammed, and find themselves in danger from the area's inhabitants and its terrain. It stars Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox, with Beatty and Cox making their feature film debuts. A critical and commercial success, it earned three Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe nominations, grossed 46.1 million dollars against a 2 million dollar budget, and became a touchstone of popular culture for its Dueling Banjos scene. In 2008 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
