Secrets & Lies is a 1996 British-French comedy-drama written and directed by Mike Leigh. It follows Cynthia, played by Brenda Blethyn, whose life is upended when Hortense, the mixed-race daughter she gave up for adoption at birth, tracks her down as an adult seeking a relationship, unsettling Cynthia's wider family in the process. The film premiered at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, where it won both the Palme d'Or and the Best Actress award for Blethyn, and it went on to earn five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. It also won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, and by 1999 the British Film Institute had ranked it among the forty best British films of the twentieth century.
