Hellboy

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

Hellboy is a comic book character and series created by writer and artist Mike Mignola, first appearing in 1993 before being launched as an ongoing story with the Dark Horse Comics miniseries Hellboy: Seed of Destruction in 1994. The character, a demon summoned to Earth by Nazi occultists in the final days of the Second World War but raised by the Allies to become a monster-fighting paranormal investigator, combines horror, pulp adventure and Mignola's own heavily shadowed, folklore-influenced art style. The series became one of the most commercially and critically successful creator-owned comics of its era and was later adapted into feature films and animated productions.
