Central Station

World and International Narrative Cinema

Central Station is a 1998 film directed by Walter Salles, a Brazil and France co-production following Dora, a retired schoolteacher who writes letters for illiterate customers at Rio de Janeiro's Central do Brasil train station, who reluctantly takes responsibility for Josue, a nine year old boy recently orphaned, and travels with him across Brazil's rural northeast in search of the father he has never met. The journey gradually softens Dora's own hardened, cynical view of the people she meets, turning the film into both a road movie and a portrait of Brazil's regional divide between the wealthy south and the impoverished interior. It won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and earned actress Fernanda Montenegro the first Academy Award and Golden Globe acting nominations ever given to a Brazilian performer, marking a breakthrough moment for Brazilian cinema on the world stage.
