Resident Evil, known in Japan as Biohazard, is a Japanese survival horror video game franchise created by Shinji Mikami for Capcom, beginning with Resident Evil in 1996, in which special police operatives investigate a mansion overrun by zombies created by the bioweapons research of the fictional Umbrella Corporation. The original game, with its fixed camera angles, deliberately limited ammunition and puzzle based exploration, is widely credited, alongside earlier titles such as Alone in the Dark, with defining and popularizing the survival horror genre for a mass audience, and the series has continued across more than a dozen main installments that have periodically shifted between slower paced horror and more action oriented gameplay, most notably with Resident Evil 4 in 2005, frequently ranked among the greatest video games ever made. The franchise has sold more than 150 million units worldwide and has expanded into a long running series of live action films, an anime, novels, comic books and a Netflix television series, making it one of the most adapted video game franchises in other media.
