Grand Theft Auto is a British American video game franchise developed principally by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games, beginning with the original Grand Theft Auto in 1997, an overhead view crime game that let players commit crimes and steal vehicles across a fictional open city, a premise that expanded dramatically with Grand Theft Auto III in 2001, whose fully three dimensional open world is widely credited with establishing the modern open world action game genre. Later entries, particularly Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004 and Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, expanded the series' scope, satire of American culture and commercial scale enormously, with Grand Theft Auto V and its online multiplayer component Grand Theft Auto Online generating more than 8 billion dollars in revenue, making it among the most commercially successful entertainment products ever released in any medium. The franchise has repeatedly drawn public controversy over its violent content and satirical treatment of crime, and its influence is widely visible across the broader open world action game genre that followed it.
