Assassin's Creed is a French video game franchise developed principally by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft, beginning with Assassin's Creed in 2007, which follows a modern day protagonist who relives the genetic memories of ancestors involved in a centuries spanning secret conflict between the freedom oriented Assassin Brotherhood and the order seeking Templars, dramatized through historically detailed open world settings including the Crusades, Renaissance Italy, revolutionary France, ancient Egypt and Viking age England. The series is known for combining fictional conspiracy storytelling with carefully researched historical architecture and settings, employing historians as consultants, and its Animus device framing device, in which memories are experienced as a simulation, allows each installment to explore a different historical period while nominally continuing a single overarching science fiction plot. Across more than a dozen main installments and numerous spin offs the franchise has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide, and it has expanded into novels, comic books, a Netflix live action series and a feature film released in 2016.
