Vera Drake

Vera Drake is a 2004 film written and directed by Mike Leigh, a co-production of the United Kingdom, the United States and France. It follows a working class woman in London in 1950 who cleans houses for a living and, believing she is performing an act of charity, secretly and illegally performs abortions for young women, unaware that her partner in the arrangement charges the women fees. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and three BAFTA Awards, and was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
