The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson, who co-wrote the screenplay with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, adapting the third volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, published in 1955. It follows Frodo and Sam's journey to destroy the One Ring at Mount Doom while their companions battle Sauron's forces for the fate of Middle-earth. At the 76th Academy Awards the film won all eleven Oscars for which it was nominated, including Best Picture, the first fantasy film to win the award, tying the record for most wins with Ben-Hur and Titanic.
