Frida is a 2002 American biographical film about the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, directed by Julie Taymor and starring Salma Hayek as Kahlo and Alfred Molina as her husband, muralist Diego Rivera. Produced by Hayek's Ventanarosa and distributed by Miramax Films, the screenplay was adapted by multiple writers from Hayden Herrera's 1983 biography of the artist. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on August 29, 2002 and received a United States theatrical release that October, earning 56.3 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 12 million dollars and winning two of its six Academy Award nominations, for Best Makeup and Best Original Score.
