The Big Red One

The Big Red One is a 1980 American epic war film written and directed by Samuel Fuller, starring Lee Marvin alongside an ensemble cast including Mark Hamill, Robert Carradine, Bobby Di Cicco, Kelly Ward, Siegfried Rauch and Stephane Audran. Based on Fuller' s own experiences as a soldier in the U.S. Army' s 1st Infantry Division, whose nickname gives the film its title, it was a long gestating passion project developed from the late 1950s, produced independently on a low budget and shot on location in Israel and Ireland; during post production the distributor United Artists recut the film without Fuller' s involvement, substantially shortening its runtime.
