Rebecca (1940 film)

Rebecca is a 1940 American gothic romance directed by Alfred Hitchcock, his first American production and first film for producer David O. Selznick, based on Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel. An unnamed young woman marries the widower Maxim de Winter and moves to his estate, Manderley, where she struggles against the lingering presence of his first wife Rebecca and the hostility of housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, before the truth of Rebecca's death is revealed. The film received eleven Academy Award nominations, more than any other film that year, and won Best Picture and Best Cinematography, the only Hitchcock film ever to win Best Picture.
