Hamlet (1948 film)

Hamlet is a 1948 British film directed by, produced by and starring Laurence Olivier, adapting Shakespeare's tragedy for Two Cities Films with roughly ninety minutes of the play cut, including the characters Rosencrantz, Guildenstern and Fortinbras. The prince learns from his father's ghost that Claudius murdered him and married his mother Gertrude, and feigns madness while testing Claudius's guilt, leading to a final duel in which several characters die. It became the first British film and the first sound adaptation of the play in English to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, with Olivier winning Best Actor, and it also won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
