Dragnet (TV series)

Television Programming Landmarks

Dragnet is an American police procedural television series created by and starring Jack Webb as Detective Joe Friday, which aired on NBC from 1951 to 1959 after Webb had already established the show as a radio drama on NBC beginning in 1949. Many of its early television episodes adapted or directly reused dialogue and plotlines from the radio version, with a cast drawn largely from veteran radio actors experienced in the show's flat, matter of fact delivery, before later episodes moved to original stories; a syndicated rerun package was retitled Badge 714 after Friday's badge number to distinguish it from the network broadcast. Webb designed the series to present a deliberately realistic portrayal of police work, and it is widely credited with shaping mid twentieth century American public perceptions of law enforcement.
