Pioneer Short Films, 1895 to 1903

The earliest moving pictures, single-reel shorts made between 1895 and 1903 by the first film pioneers, from the Lumiere brothers actualities to Georges Melies fantasies and Edwin Porter narrative editing. A work belongs here when its article describes it as one of these first short films. It excludes the feature-length silent films that followed in the 1910s and 1920s, which sit in the national and genre groups. Works are placed by what their cited article states about their country, form and period, and each work sits in exactly one group of this subcategory, so a film that fits two traditions goes where its article places it first.
