The Perils of Pauline

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

The Perils of Pauline is a 1914 American film serial produced by the Pathe Freres studio's American branch, starring Pearl White as an adventurous heiress repeatedly placed in life threatening situations, from runaway hot air balloons to burning buildings, across twenty episodes. Released in weekly installments each ending on an unresolved cliffhanger to draw audiences back the following week, it was an enormous commercial success and is widely credited with popularizing the serial format and the cliffhanger structure in American filmmaking. Only fragments of the original episodes are known to survive, most of what circulates today being drawn from a shorter French reedited version.
