Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920 film)

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1920 American silent film directed by John S. Robertson, an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novella starring John Barrymore in the dual title role. Barrymore performed the character's first on-screen transformation from Jekyll into Hyde through his own facial contortions alone, without the aid of makeup or camera trickery, a choice widely noted at the time and since. Released the same year as several rival adaptations of the same story, it became the most enduring silent version and helped establish Barrymore's reputation as a dramatic actor of unusual range.
