The Kid

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

The Kid is a 1921 American silent film written, produced, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin, his first feature-length film as a director, following Chaplin's Tramp character as he raises an abandoned child, played by young actor Jackie Coogan, after finding him in the street. The film combined Chaplin's established comic performance style with an unusually sustained current of sentiment and pathos for a comedy of its time, a blending of humor and emotional drama that became a lasting influence on later film comedy. The Kid was the second-highest-grossing film released in 1921 and is now widely regarded as one of the greatest films of the silent era, and it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2011.

FAQs

How much of The Kid came from Charlie Chaplin's own life?

The Library of Congress essay calls it arguably Chaplin's most personal and autobiographical work.

A great deal. The Library of Congress National Film Registry essay calls The Kid arguably Chaplin's most personal and autobiographical work, and says many of its settings and themes come right out of his own impoverished London childhood.
