Strike is a 1925 Soviet silent film directed by Sergei Eisenstein, his first feature as director, dramatizing a factory workers' strike in pre-revolutionary Russia and its violent suppression by the authorities. Eisenstein used the film to develop the theory of montage editing he would refine further in his next film, Battleship Potemkin, and cast largely non-professional performers selected for their physical type rather than trained actors, a technique he called typage. Though less widely seen today than Battleship Potemkin, it is regarded by film historians as a foundational work of Soviet montage cinema and an important record of Eisenstein's early style.
