Steamboat Bill, Jr.

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Steamboat Bill, Jr. is a 1928 American silent comedy starring Buster Keaton as the effete college-educated son of a gruff Mississippi riverboat captain, who must win his father's respect and the favor of his sweetheart's family while his father's rundown steamboat competes against a wealthy rival's new vessel. The film's climax is an elaborate cyclone sequence built around large-scale practical stunts, including the famous shot in which the two-ton facade of a house falls around Keaton, who survives unharmed only because he is standing precisely where an open window frame lands. Steamboat Bill, Jr. is widely regarded as one of Keaton's most technically ambitious silent features and the source of one of the most reproduced stunt images in film history.
