Pandora's Box

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

Pandora's Box, released in Germany as Die Buchse der Pandora, is a 1929 German silent drama directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst, adapted from two plays by Frank Wedekind and starring American actress Louise Brooks as Lulu, a young woman whose sexuality draws destruction to the men around her before she is ultimately murdered by Jack the Ripper in the film's final scenes. The film received a poor critical reception on its original release but was reassessed decades later as a major work of late silent-era German cinema. Pandora's Box is widely regarded as Louise Brooks's most acclaimed performance and a landmark of Weimar-era German filmmaking.
