Milestone
Founding of the New York Sun
Also Known As Birth of the Penny Press
Journalism Milestones
On September 3, 1833, twenty-three-year-old publisher Benjamin Day launched the New York Sun, priced at one cent against the five or six cents rival papers charged, with the slogan It Shines for All. The Sun sold on the street by hawkers rather than only by subscription, ran illustrations and everyday crime reporting aimed at a working class readership the subscription press had largely ignored, and proved successful enough to launch an entire genre of one cent newspapers, the penny press, that remade American newspaper publishing's business model and audience over the following decade.
