Stephen Dwoskin (1939-2012) was an American-born avant-garde filmmaker who emigrated from New York City to London in 1964 and became a central figure in British experimental cinema. His films explored gaze theory and the representation of the body, including Times For in 1970, his first feature-length film, and Dyn Amo in 1972, shot in a Soho strip club and praised by second-wave feminist critics. After contracting polio as a child he became a significant disabled filmmaker and activist for alternative cinema, addressing his own life as a disabled person directly in Behindert in 1974 and in the autobiographical Trying to Kiss the Moon in 1994, which drew on home movie footage. He was instrumental in founding the London Film-Makers' Co-op in 1966.
