Stanley Kwan, born 9 October 1957, is a Hong Kong film director and producer whose work since the mid-1980s has centered on women's interior lives and, more recently, queer experience. His 1987 melodrama Rouge won him Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards, and his 2001 film Lan Yu, an account of a gay relationship in Beijing, won Best Director at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards. Kwan is counted among the few openly gay directors in Asian cinema to place queer characters and relationships at the center of mainstream narrative filmmaking rather than treating them as incidental.
