Directors and Filmmakers

Franklin James Schaffner (1920 to 1989) was an American director whose career moved from live television drama into major studio filmmaking. He began in television, winning multiple Emmy Awards for directing anthology series such as Studio One and The Defenders, before his feature film breakthrough. In film he won the Academy Award for Best Director for Patton (1970) and directed a run of large-scale science fiction and historical films including Planet of the Apes (1968), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Papillon (1973), and The Boys from Brazil (1978).
