The Entertainment Software Rating Board, ESRB, was established in 1994 by the Entertainment Software Association, then known as the Interactive Digital Software Association, in response to congressional hearings in 1993 that criticized the violent or sexual content of games such as Mortal Kombat, Night Trap and Doom. The board launched officially on 16 September 1994 with five age based ratings, later expanded and renamed over time, and it operates as a self regulatory, non-profit body based in New York City that assigns age and content ratings to video games sold in the United States and Canada.
