Italian inventor and entrepreneur who made wireless telegraphy practical and commercial, and in December 1901 claimed reception of the first transatlantic radio signal at Signal Hill, Newfoundland. He shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun for contributions to wireless telegraphy.
