Gunsmoke is an American radio Western drama that premiered on CBS in 1952, starring William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon, a lawman in the fictional frontier town of Dodge City, Kansas. The series was deliberately written and performed with a grittier, more morally ambiguous and adult tone than earlier radio Westerns aimed largely at children, presenting violence and its consequences with unusual realism for the genre. Gunsmoke's radio success led to a television adaptation in 1955 that ran for twenty seasons, becoming one of the longest-running primetime dramas in American television history, while the original radio series is remembered as a defining example of radio drama's late, more mature Western form.
