The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a British comedy science-fiction radio series written by Douglas Adams, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 beginning in 1978, following ordinary Englishman Arthur Dent across the galaxy moments after Earth is demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass. The series originated the format from which Adams later developed the well known series of novels, and it introduced the comic conceits, such as the number 42 as the answer to the meaning of life, that became closely associated with his work. The radio series is widely regarded as a landmark of British comedic science fiction and as the original creative source for the entire multimedia franchise that followed it.
