The Chase and Sanborn Hour was an American variety and comedy radio program broadcast on NBC from 1929 to 1948, sponsored by the Chase and Sanborn coffee company, that built its long run around a changing lineup of major entertainers rather than a single fixed cast. The show is most closely associated with ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his wisecracking dummy Charlie McCarthy, who joined the program in 1937 and became one of the biggest entertainment draws in American radio despite Bergen's act depending on a visual illusion the medium could not actually show. The Chase and Sanborn Hour is remembered by broadcast historians as one of the defining sponsored variety programs of American radio's golden age and for demonstrating the format's unusual power to make a ventriloquist a national radio star.
