Sergeant Preston of the Yukon began broadcasting on Detroit station WXYZ on January 3, 1939, under the title Challenge of the Yukon, created by Fran Striker and George W. Trendle, the same team behind The Lone Ranger. The series followed Sergeant William Preston of the North-West Mounted Police and his sled dog Yukon King as they pursued criminals through the wilderness of the Canadian North during the Klondike Gold Rush era, moving from a Detroit-only broadcast to the ABC and then Mutual networks before its title changed to Sergeant Preston of the Yukon in September 1950. A television adaptation starring Richard Simmons ran on CBS from 1955 to 1958, extending the character's popularity well beyond radio.
