The Archers is a BBC radio soap opera set among farming families in the fictional English village of Ambridge, first broadcast nationally on the BBC Light Programme on January 1, 1951, after a trial run the previous year. Originally devised with input from the Ministry of Agriculture as a way of relaying farming information to a rural audience within an ongoing family drama, it has remained in continuous production since its launch and broadcasts new episodes several times a week on BBC Radio 4. It is the world's longest running radio drama still in production.
