Zine

Print

A zine is a small circulation, noncommercial publication, often homemade or self published online, usually devoted to a specialized and frequently unconventional subject that mainstream commercial publishing does not cover. Zines are typically produced by a single person or a very small group, historically photocopied and assembled by hand, and are generally defined as having a circulation of one thousand copies or fewer, with many produced in editions of under one hundred. The related term fanzine refers specifically to a nonprofessional publication produced by enthusiasts devoted to a particular cultural interest, such as a literary or musical genre, and the broader zine tradition grew out of a do it yourself philosophy that deliberately rejects the conventions of professional commercial publishing. Zines have served an important role across many subcultures as a way to build community among people who are geographically scattered or socially marginalized, and they hold real cultural and academic value today as a documentary record of communities and movements that mainstream media rarely covered at the time.
