Palestine (comics)

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

Palestine is a nonfiction graphic narrative written and drawn by cartoonist Joe Sacco, first serialized as nine comic book issues from 1993 to 1995 and later published by Fantagraphics Books in two volumes and then a single edition in 2001 with an introduction by Edward Said. Drawing on two months Sacco spent in the West Bank and Gaza Strip during the winter of 1991 and 1992, the book combines his own on-the-ground reporting with the everyday testimony of Palestinians he met, set against the broader history of the Israeli occupation, the First Intifada and the Gulf War. It won the American Book Award in 1996 and is credited with helping establish long-form comics journalism as a serious documentary form.
