Origins of Podcasting Technology

Interactive and Digital Media Milestones

Podcasting's enabling technology predates its name. In October 2000, Tristan Louis proposed attaching audio and video files to RSS feeds as enclosures, a mechanism that let a feed announce a downloadable media file alongside its text. Dave Winer, a developer and author of the RSS format, implemented the idea shortly after. The enclosure tag meant a subscriber's software could automatically download new audio files as they were published, the core mechanic every later podcast client relies on. The practice went unnamed for several years and grew informally; Adam Curry's show Daily Source Code, launched in August 2004, is widely cited as an early popular example of the format once it had taken shape, though the sources do not credit any single broadcast as definitively the first podcast: podcasting emerged gradually through several technical and community developments between 2000 and 2004 rather than in one identifiable debut.
