Kevin Carter

Kevin Carter was a South African photojournalist, born in 1960, whose photography documented the violence of apartheid-era South Africa and humanitarian crises beyond it. A member of the group of conflict photographers known as the Bang-Bang Club, he covered township violence throughout the final years of apartheid. In 1993 he traveled to famine-stricken Sudan, where he photographed a starving child being watched by a vulture, an image that became known as The Vulture and the Little Girl and that won him the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. The photograph brought him international recognition alongside intense public scrutiny over the ethics of photographing suffering rather than intervening. He died in July 1994 at the age of thirty-three, shortly after receiving the Pulitzer.
