The Sorrow and the Pity

Documentary and Nonfiction Film

The Sorrow and the Pity is a 1969 documentary directed by Marcel Ophuls, examining life in the French city of Clermont-Ferrand under Nazi occupation through interviews with former resistance fighters, collaborators, farmers and German officers. The film directly challenged the prevailing postwar French narrative of near-universal resistance to occupation, presenting a far more mixed and uncomfortable picture of collaboration, and French state television declined to broadcast it for years after its release. The Sorrow and the Pity is widely regarded as a landmark of documentary filmmaking confronting a nation's own historical memory, and it strongly influenced later documentary treatments of wartime collaboration.
