Night and Fog is a 1956 French documentary short directed by Alain Resnais, using footage of abandoned concentration camp sites alongside archival photographs and film to document the Nazi concentration and death camp system, framed around the Nacht und Nebel decree, meaning night and fog, under which political prisoners were made to disappear without trace. Made only a decade after the camps' liberation and informed by evidence already presented at the Nuremberg trials, the film was one of the earliest and most influential works of Holocaust documentation on film, and it remains widely used in education about the Holocaust and about state directed disappearance as a method of political repression.
