Texaco Star Theatre

Television Programming Landmarks

Texaco Star Theatre is an American television variety show broadcast on NBC from 1948 to 1956, built for most of its run around comedian Milton Berle as host, performer and frequent onscreen presence in outlandish costumes and slapstick sketches. Its early popularity was credited with driving a rapid rise in American television set ownership, since many viewers reportedly bought sets specifically to watch it, and it helped earn Berle the enduring nickname Mr Television. It is regarded by television historians as one of the defining programs of American network television's earliest years.
