Land Without Bread is a 1933 Spanish documentary short directed by Luis Bunuel, depicting the extreme poverty, isolation and hardship of the Las Hurdes region of western Spain through a formally detached, matter-of-fact narration paired with often startling imagery. Bunuel, previously known for the surrealist films Un Chien Andalou and L'Age d'Or, brought some of that sensibility to a nominally factual subject, and later scholarship has established that several sequences were staged or arranged by the filmmakers rather than simply observed. It remains a widely studied and debated early example of documentary form being used toward deliberately unsettling, quasi-surrealist ends.
