Chronicle of a Summer

Documentary and Nonfiction Film

Chronicle of a Summer is a 1961 French documentary directed by sociologist Edgar Morin and ethnographic filmmaker Jean Rouch, built around interviews with ordinary Parisians about their daily lives, work and happiness, filmed with then new lightweight synchronized sound equipment that let subjects speak directly and informally to the camera. The film ends with Rouch and Morin screening the footage back to its own participants and filming their reactions, an unusually self reflexive structure for its time. It is widely credited with popularizing the term cinema verite and is regarded as a foundational work of direct, participant aware documentary filmmaking.
